In March 2011, National PTA® launched an initiative to encourage PTAs across the country to lead conversations in their school communities about bullying, how it is affecting their communities, and to develop solutions that they can implement collaboratively together. The campaign offers tools and resources that PTAs can use to plan their Connect for Respect events.

The Overcoming Obstacles Anti-Bullying Handbook: Creating a Positive Environment in the Classroom and Beyond helps students identify the different forms bullying takes at school, in their daily lives, and over the internet, and provides realistic strategies for taking a stand against bullying and creating a safe and supportive school community. The handbook contains over 20 hours of instruction on six important topics, including helping victims, dealing with violence, and cyberbullying solutions. Students learn to use core skills such as communication, decision making, and goal setting to address this pervasive issue.

The purpose of this review is to provide special educators with an overview of definitions and issues related to bullying perpetration and victimization and to synthesize research on this topic as it pertains to students with disabilities by disability type, personal characteristics, and educational placement.
