On June 3, 2011 the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention National Training and Technical Assistance Center (OJJDP NTTAC) hosted the webinar Bullying and Civil Rights: An Overview of School Districts' Federal Obligation to Respond to Harassment. Participants of the webinar gained or enhanced their knowledge of: * When bullying triggers obligations under federal anti-discrimination laws o What conduct constitutes harassment (including the type of conduct and protected classes) o Examples of harassment * The obligation of school districts to respond to allegations of harassment in a prompt, thorough, and effective manner o Examples of appropriate and inappropriate responses * What to do if the harassment continues o Resources available through the Departments of Education and Justice

open close toggle Creating a Safe and Respectful Environment on Our Nation's School Buses Toolkit & Training Safe and Supportive Schools Technical Assistance Center 2011

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Healthy Students and the Safe and Supportive Schools Technical Assistance Center partnered with the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) to coordinate a special event on Creating a Safe and Respectful Environment on Our Nation’s School Buses. These modules are intentionally designed to be offered as a series. The content of each module complements and completes the content contained in the other module. While Module 1 (See Something. Do Something. Intervening in Bullying Behavior) addresses how to identify and effectively intervene when bullying occurs (including tips on de-escalation), Module 2 (Creating a Supportive Bus Climate: Preventing Bullying) considers effective strategies to build a bus climate where bullying is less likely to occur. It’s our belief that bus drivers and students alike are best served when BOTH modules are covered with drivers within a short timeframe of one another.

open close toggle Bullying Intervention: What Works Webinar Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention 2011

hool personnel and other professionals who work with children and youth often experience challenges in identifying bullying and effectively intervening when it occurs. In Bullying Intervention: What Works, three bullying prevention and intervention experts helped participants understand what bullying is (and isn't) and discussed challenges in defining and identifying bullying behaviors. They highlighted key findings from research regarding the prevalence of bullying and the many roles that children and youth can play in instances of bullying. Participants learned which actions children and youth feel are helpful in addressing bullying, and they learned best practice strategies to communicate and intervene with youth who bully, youth who are bullied, and those who witness bullying.

BFF (Be a Friend First) a title selected by middle school girls, was created to help them develop healthy relationship skills, understand relational aggression, and learn about conflict resolution and bullying prevention. Based on Girl Scouts of the USA’s aMAZE! Journey leadership curriculum, the activities and content in BFF are correlated to national and state standards, particularly character education, service learning, and written communication skills. Girls begin BFF by understanding how to develop healthy friendships. They then learn to deal with relational aggression and bullying in their own relationships. Finally, they lead with friendship in their schools and communities by taking action to prevent bully behavior. BFF is tailored to girls’ specific interests and needs. It is based on extensive research on girls’ relationships and bullying behavior, conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute, as well as focus groups with middle school girls from across the country. BFF was developed to address girl-bullying specifically, and during the years when it is most prevalent. Facilitated by trained community volunteers in middle schools, faith or community-based settings, BFF is designed to create opportunities for girls to share their experiences, gain skills for developing meaningful friendships through games and role plays, and practice resolving conflict in healthy ways. Importantly, girls will work on a project of their own design to address bullying in their schools or larger communities. This is a key part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience—taking action to make the world a better place—an empowering experience for girls on this or any issue! I am the Co-Founder of Badge Society, an LGBTQ online community for all ages. The site is a year old and consists of a forum, news page and a directory (coming soon).
