The Alverno College Research Center for Women and Girls (“Research Center”) generates and applies scholarly research for the purpose of inspiring, transforming and supporting initiatives to improve the lives of women and girls in the state of Wisconsin and beyond. In November 2011, the Research Center shared its findings regarding best practices for teachers, community organizations and parents to address bullying. Specifically, the Research Center’s Bullying: A Prevention Toolkit is the coalescence of current scholarly research regarding the causes and effects of bullying behaviors, the impact of bystanders on bullying behaviors and action items for parents, educators and communities to reduce and respond to bullying behaviors.

This Youth Leaders’ Toolkit is designed for the Leadership Team. It will help you develop a project or campaign working with younger children -the Project Team - to raise awareness about bullying and to involve them as leaders in their school or organization. The main purpose of the Toolkit is to guide the discussions that will help you lead the Project Team as they develop their own project to address bullying.

The film BULLY follows five stories of children and families who are affected deeply by bullying within the course of a school year. With intimate glimpses into homes, classrooms, cafeterias, and principals’ offices, the film offers insight into the lives of bullied, ridiculed children. Historically, seemingly small instances of labeling and ridicule have catastrophic consequences for the marginalized groups involved. This film brings those “small” instances into the spotlight creating a space to discuss the effects of bullying. The accompanying guide tells the personal stories of those bullied, and suggests that improving school climate takes fostering a reflective and engaging learning community.
